Many of Missouri’s citizens get their drinking water indirectly from the Missouri River. When public water system supervisors encounter problems with the smell or taste of water, they call Dr. Honglan Shi, a professor at Missouri S&T. Dr. Shi has a national reputation as a drinking water quality expert.
Dr. Shi helped two public water systems in Missouri troubleshoot potential quality issues last year, and, based on those successes, she was able to land multiple grants for water studies this year. Not only do these grants provide funding for research in the state, the results help all citizens and also provide teaching opportunities for her students.
“These students are solving real-world problems to help the people of Missouri, the United States and the world,” said Shi.
